Overview

High Voltage Electrical Industry

The High Voltage (HV) electrical industry is a critical part of Australia’s energy infrastructure, responsible for the generation, transmission, distribution, and safe operation of electrical systems that operate above 1,000 volts AC or 1,500 volts DC.

HV professionals ensure electricity is delivered safely and reliably from power stations and renewable energy facilities, through transmission networks and substations, to industrial facilities, mines, and distribution networks. As Australia’s grid modernises and transitions towards renewable energy, demand for skilled high voltage personnel continues to grow.

The industry spans electricity generation, mining, oil and gas, manufacturing, utilities, transport, defence, renewable energy, and major infrastructure. Workers install, commission, operate, test, maintain, and isolate equipment such as transformers, switchgear, circuit breakers, substations, transmission lines, protection systems, and high voltage cables — with many roles also involving switching operations, fault finding, and strict compliance with electrical safety legislation and Australian Standards.

Working in HV requires a strong commitment to safety. Because of the significant hazards of high-energy systems, personnel follow rigorous procedures including isolation, permit systems, switching schedules, risk assessments, and safe work practices. Workers are typically trained in HV Switching, HV Isolation, Access Authority procedures, Rescue from Live Electrical Apparatus, Low Voltage Rescue (LVR), CPR, and relevant standards, with ongoing competency verification and refresher training the norm.

Australia’s growing investment in renewable energy is creating new opportunities across the sector. Large-scale solar and wind farms, battery energy storage systems (BESS), pumped hydro, and new transmission corridors all require qualified HV electricians, technicians, and engineers to construct, commission, and maintain these assets, supported by significant government investment in energy infrastructure.

Employers range from network operators and renewable developers to mining companies, engineering consultancies, contractors, utilities, and manufacturers. For licensed electricians seeking to advance, HV offers diverse pathways, excellent earning potential, and the chance to work on some of Australia’s most significant infrastructure — making HV skills among the most valuable and sought-after in the electrical industry.
