Getting Started

How to Take the First Step

With strong demand across utilities, mining, renewables, and major infrastructure, there are numerous opportunities for licensed electricians to specialise in HV. Working with high voltage systems requires additional training and experience, but following a structured pathway can help you enter the industry successfully.

1

Become a licensed electrician

Complete a Certificate III in Electrotechnology Electrician (UEE30820) through an apprenticeship, gaining the skills and knowledge to work safely and qualify for an unrestricted electrical licence.

2

Gain industrial experience

Work on electrical distribution, motors, switchboards, control systems, or industrial maintenance. Experience with fault finding, testing, and maintenance provides a strong foundation for developing HV skills.

3

Complete high voltage training

Undertake HV Switching, HV Isolation, HV Access Authority, and electrical safety courses, plus commonly required certifications such as LVR, CPR, First Aid, Working at Heights, and Confined Spaces.

4

Find HV employment

Seek roles with network operators, renewable developers, mining companies, engineering contractors, and industrial maintenance providers. Entry-level HV positions often involve working under experienced mentors in substations, switching, maintenance, and commissioning.

5

Develop specialist skills

Build experience in substation maintenance, protection systems, relay testing, commissioning, cable testing, and fault diagnosis to access advanced technical roles and higher earning potential.

6

Network in the industry

Join professional associations, attend industry events, participate in manufacturer training, and build relationships with experienced HV professionals to learn about opportunities and stay informed.

7

Commit to safety

Maintain strict adherence to electrical safety procedures, risk assessments, and Australian Standards. Employers place significant value on a safety-first attitude, attention to detail, and a willingness to keep improving.

A rewarding pathway

With the right qualifications, practical experience, and specialised training, HV offers excellent job security, outstanding earning potential, and the chance to work on some of Australia’s most important energy and infrastructure projects.
