The Role

What You’ll Do Day to Day

You’ll install, maintain, test, fault-find, and repair the electrical systems that power cooling, heating, ventilation, and refrigeration equipment — helping homes, hospitals, shopping centres, industrial facilities, and food storage operations stay safe, comfortable, and efficient.

Install wiring & controls

Wire and connect air conditioners, refrigeration units, cool rooms, freezers, ventilation, heat pumps, and large HVAC equipment — motors, compressors, sensors, thermostats, switchboards, contactors, relays, and electronic controllers.

Read technical drawings

Interpret electrical drawings, wiring diagrams, schematics, and manuals to install equipment correctly and to Australian Standards, often working alongside refrigeration mechanics, engineers, and other trades.

Troubleshoot & fault-find

Use multimeters, insulation resistance testers, clamp meters, and diagnostic tools to identify faults in motors, control circuits, power supplies, sensors, control boards, VSDs, or communication systems before repairing.

Perform maintenance

Routine inspections, testing safety devices, checking connections, replacing worn components, and verifying safe, efficient operation — reducing breakdowns, downtime, and energy use for customers.

Work with automation

Program controllers, configure communication networks, and integrate HVAC into larger building automation platforms as systems increasingly rely on digital controls and smart building technologies.

Prioritise safety

Follow strict electrical safety procedures, isolate equipment correctly, use PPE, and comply with WHS requirements around live systems, moving machinery, and refrigeration plant.

Work across environments

Residential homes, commercial buildings, supermarkets, hospitals, manufacturing, mining, cold storage, and large industrial plants — varied and challenging, with no two days the same.

Solve real problems

Ideal for electricians who enjoy problem-solving and combining electrical expertise with hands-on work on essential systems that support modern buildings, businesses, and industries.
