Routes Into the Field

The industry offers several entry points — whether you’re a school leaver, apprentice, qualified electrician, or experienced tradesperson. Most begin with an electrical apprenticeship, then move into renewables by gaining solar, battery, and infrastructure experience.

1

Complete an electrical apprenticeship

The Certificate III in Electrotechnology Electrician (UEE30820) typically takes four years, combining classroom training with workplace experience. On completion you obtain an electrical licence and can work across the industry, including renewables.

2

Transition into renewables

Gain experience with solar PV installations, battery storage, and renewable infrastructure. Many employers provide on-the-job training and encourage specialist solar and renewable qualifications to expand skills and employability. Please note that Solar Accreditation Australia (SAA) accreditation is mandatory for any installer or designer wanting their systems to qualify for STCs under the Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme.

3

Move across from other sectors

Electricians in residential, commercial, industrial, mining, or construction can move into renewables by training in solar PV, BESS, EV charging, and commissioning — strong demand means experienced tradespeople often transition quickly.

School Student → Apprentice → Licensed Electrician → Solar Electrician → Senior Solar Technician → Renewable Energy Specialist → Supervisor / PM
4

Specialise for large-scale projects

Add high-voltage switching, testing and commissioning, substations, and protection systems to access solar farms, wind farms, battery facilities, and transmission projects — often higher-paying technical and supervisory roles.

5

Enter the EV sector

Specialise in EV charging infrastructure installation and maintenance, combining traditional electrical skills with emerging renewable and smart energy systems as the market rapidly expands.

6

Advance or start a business

Progress into senior technical, supervisory, operations, and project management roles — or establish your own solar and electrical contracting business as rooftop solar, batteries, and EV charging continue to grow.
