The Role

What You’ll Do as a Trainer

Your role is to develop the skills, knowledge, and confidence of apprentices, electricians, and industry professionals. You’ll use your trade experience to teach practical and theoretical concepts, assess competency, and help learners prepare for successful careers in the electrical industry.

Deliver training programs

Explain electrical principles, demonstrate industry techniques, and guide learners through hands-on activities in classroom and practical workshop environments designed to replicate real workplace situations.

Assess student performance

Observe practical tasks, mark written assessments, conduct competency conversations, and verify that learners can perform work safely and to industry standards.

Mentor and coach

Provide guidance, encouragement, and support throughout the learning journey. Many learners look to their trainers for advice on career pathways, workplace expectations, and professional development.

Prepare lessons and materials

Plan sessions, update learning resources, and keep content aligned with current industry practice, standards, legislation, and emerging technologies such as renewables, automation, and battery storage.

Conduct workplace visits

Carry out on-site assessments, observe learners in real working environments, and engage with employers to ensure training outcomes align with workplace requirements.

Promote safety

Model and reinforce safe work practices, demonstrate correct procedures, and embed compliance with workplace health and safety requirements across all training activities.

Manage administration

Maintain student records, complete assessment documentation, provide feedback, monitor progress, and ensure compliance with vocational education and training standards.

Contribute to development

Depending on the organisation, support course development, industry engagement, apprentice recruitment, and the design of new training initiatives — often a step toward senior and leadership roles.
