Pathways

Routes Into the Field

This is a structured pathway that builds from a core electrical trade qualification into highly specialised industrial expertise. It’s not typically an entry-level position ; t’s reached through experience, further training, and exposure to high-risk environments.

1

Start with an electrical apprenticeship

Complete a Certificate III in Electrotechnology Electrician (UEE30820) over about four years, developing essential skills in wiring, installation, testing, fault finding, and electrical safety, the foundation for all advanced work.

2

Obtain an electrical licence

Get your state or territory licence to work unsupervised. Most electricians then move into commercial, industrial, or maintenance roles; many move into mining, manufacturing, or utilities early to gain exposure to complex systems.

3

Gain industrial & site experience

Build experience in mining, oil and gas, LNG plants, manufacturing and processing, and power generation, including exposure to motors, control systems, instrumentation, and high-voltage equipment common in hazardous areas.

4

Complete hazardous area training (EEHA)

Cover hazardous area classifications (Zone 0, 1, 2), explosion protection methods (Ex d, Ex e, Ex i), installation and maintenance standards, AS/NZS 60079 compliance, and inspection and documentation, the key transition into a specialist role.

5

Progress into advanced certification

Enhance your career with CompEx certification, advanced EEHA inspection and auditing units, instrumentation and control qualifications, and high-risk work licences, which increases employability and opening higher-paying roles.

6

Enter a hazardous areas specialist role

Transition into Hazardous Areas Electrician, Electrical Maintenance Specialist (Hazardous Areas), Compliance or Inspection Technician, Shutdown or Commissioning Electrician, or Senior Industrial Electrician.

Career progression beyond this point

Once established, progress into Electrical Supervisor or Leading Hand, Hazardous Area Inspector, Maintenance Planner or Reliability Technician, Electrical Trainer or Assessor, or engineering and compliance support roles.
