What You’ll Do
The Role
What You’ll Do Day to Day
Your daily work revolves around ensuring electrical equipment and systems operate safely in environments where explosive gases, vapours, dust, or combustible materials may be present. These high-risk environments demand specialised knowledge, strict adherence to safety standards, and strong attention to detail.
Plan & permit
Begin by reviewing work permits, risk assessments, and safety documentation before entering a hazardous area. Every task is carefully planned to eliminate ignition sources that could cause fires or explosions.
Inspect explosion-protected equipment
Inspect motors, switchboards, control panels, lighting systems, instrumentation, and cable installations to ensure equipment remains compliant and functions safely within the classified area.
Fault find & troubleshoot
Diagnose electrical faults, investigate equipment failures, and identify issues affecting production or safety — then repair or replace components while maintaining explosion protection integrity.
Install new infrastructure
Install cabling systems, motors, instrumentation devices, control equipment, and intrinsically safe circuits, with every installation meeting strict compliance requirements and detailed documentation on completion.
Test & verify
Perform insulation resistance testing, continuity testing, loop checks, instrument calibration, and verification of explosion-protected equipment, keeping accurate records for compliance and audit trails.
Interpret documentation
Work from technical drawings, hazardous area classifications, engineering specifications, and equipment certification documents, coordinating with engineers, maintenance teams, and operations personnel.
Work across environments
From underground mines and coal processing plants to oil and gas facilities, refineries, manufacturing plants, power stations, and chemical sites — including shutdowns and ongoing reliability programs.
Embrace the variety
No two days are the same — one day inspecting flameproof equipment, the next commissioning a new installation or assisting a major plant upgrade. Variety and specialised skill make this one of the most rewarding electrical paths.
