What It Takes to Succeed

HV work requires a combination of advanced technical knowledge, practical skills, and a strong commitment to safety. Because of the risks associated with high-energy systems, employers seek people who are competent, safety-focused, and able to perform accurately under strict procedures.

Electrical theory

A strong grasp of power distribution, transformers, switchgear, protection systems, circuits, and fault currents — and the ability to interpret drawings, single-line diagrams, schematics, and technical documentation.

Troubleshooting & fault-finding

Diagnose faults with specialised test equipment, analyse system performance, and identify problems before they cause failures or outages — thinking logically and systematically on complex systems.

Safety (the most important skill)

Understand electrical hazards, risk management, isolation, permit-to-work, lock-out/tag-out (LOTO), and safe switching, with strict adherence to procedures, Australian Standards, and legislation at all times.

Practical hands-on ability

Install and maintain transformers, substations, circuit breakers, protection relays, and HV cables, proficient with specialised tools, testing equipment, and diagnostic instruments to a high standard.

Communication & teamwork

Collaborate with engineers, control room operators, project managers, supervisors, and other trades during maintenance, commissioning, and switching — clear communication keeps work coordinated and safe.

Problem-solving & decision-making

Assess risks, interpret technical information, and make informed decisions during fault response and emergencies while following established procedures and maintaining reliability.

Time management & documentation

Prioritise tasks, meet deadlines on shutdowns and projects, and complete accurate records — switching sheets, permits, maintenance logs, and inspection reports.

Adaptability & continuous learning

Keep pace with renewables, battery storage, digital substations, and smart-grid technologies through ongoing training and professional development.
