How to Take the First Step
Whether you’re a school leaver, apprentice, qualified electrician or experienced tradesperson looking to specialise, there are multiple pathways available to start a rewarding career. Getting started begins with building a strong technical foundation and gaining practical industry experience.
Understand the industry
Instrumentation and Automation specialists install, maintain, calibrate and troubleshoot equipment that measures and controls industrial processes — pressure transmitters, flow meters, temperature sensors, control valves, PLCs, SCADA systems, industrial networks and automation systems.
Choose your entry pathway
There’s no single route in. School leavers can enter through an apprenticeship; electrical apprenticeships build broad skills before specialising; dedicated instrumentation apprenticeships allow earlier specialisation; and existing tradespeople can transition through further study and industry exposure.
Obtain relevant qualifications
Common qualifications include an Electrical Apprenticeship, Certificate III in Electrotechnology Electrician, Certificate III in Instrumentation and Control, Certificate IV in Electrical Instrumentation, Diploma of Electrical Engineering, and advanced automation and control systems training.
Gain hands-on experience
Employers value real-world exposure. Opportunities include apprenticeships, traineeships, trade assistant roles, maintenance positions, shutdown work, commissioning projects and work placements, all building confidence and technical capability.
Develop technical skills
Highly valued skills include instrument calibration, electrical fault finding, PLC programming, SCADA, industrial communications, control systems, technical documentation, and testing and commissioning.
Build problem-solving skills
The ability to analyse faults, identify root causes, interpret technical information, work under pressure and develop practical solutions is highly valued, and often sets top performers apart.
Explore different industries
Mining, manufacturing, oil and gas, renewable energy, utilities, water treatment, food and beverage and infrastructure all employ these professionals. Exploring sectors helps you find the environments that best match your interests.
Network & stay current
Join industry associations, attend trade events, connect with employers and seek mentorship. Stay up to date with robotics, AI, industrial networking, smart sensors, data analytics and remote monitoring to position yourself for future growth.
Take the first step
Whether you choose an apprenticeship, electrical trade pathway or specialised instrumentation qualification, the industry offers excellent opportunities for long-term career growth. With strong demand across Australia, attractive salaries and the chance to work with advanced technologies, Instrumentation and Automation is an exciting career pathway for those who enjoy problem-solving, technology and hands-on technical work.
