How to Qualify

To work in renewable energy you must first become a qualified, licensed electrician. Many roles build on standard electrical qualifications, while additional training and industry-specific certifications significantly improve opportunities and progression.

Electrical trade qualification & licence

The pathway begins with the Certificate III in Electrotechnology Electrician (UEE30820) through an electrical apprenticeship — the minimum qualification to become licensed. On completion, you obtain an Electrical Work Licence from your state or territory regulator, involving competency assessment and regulatory approval.

Solar PV specialisation

To specialise in solar, additional PV training is highly recommended. One of the most recognised units is UEERE0054 — Install, Maintain and Fault Find Grid-Connected Photovoltaic Systems, covering design, installation, testing, commissioning, and maintenance, and widely sought by solar installation companies.

Battery storage

Utility-scale competencies

High Voltage (HV) switching operations and awareness
Switching and access permit training

Safety qualifications

Common requirements include a Construction White Card, Working Safely at Heights, Elevated Work Platform (EWP) licence, First Aid and CPR, Confined Space Entry (where applicable), and rescue from live LV panel training.

Leadership & advanced study

Those seeking leadership roles may pursue a Certificate IV in Electrical – Instrumentation, Certificate IV in Renewable Energy Technologies, Diploma of Electrical Engineering, Advanced Diploma of Engineering, or project management qualifications. Electricians who combine their licence with specialist solar, battery, high-voltage, and safety qualifications are among the most sought-after in the industry.
