Can I Get an Electrical Apprenticeship Without Doing a Pre-Apprenticeship?

pre apprenticeship training in Australia

Yes, you can absolutely obtain an electrical apprenticeship in Australia without completing a pre-apprenticeship first. A pre-apprenticeship is not a mandatory requirement for starting an electrical apprenticeship, and many apprentices begin their careers straight out of school, or transition into the electrical trade from another industry.

However, while a pre-apprenticeship electrician course isn’t essential, completing one may help you stand out when applying for an electrical apprenticeship.

What is a pre-apprenticeship?

An electrical pre-apprenticeship is designed to introduce people to the trade before they formally begin an apprenticeship. It can provide an opportunity to develop foundational knowledge, gain practical experience, and obtain a better understanding of what working as an electrician involves.

For someone considering an electrical career, this can be valuable. Electrical work is a safety-critical trade, and an employer may want to see evidence that an applicant understands the expectations of working on construction sites, following procedures, and working safely around electrical equipment.

A pre-apprenticeship can also help you decide whether the trade is right for you before committing to a full apprenticeship.

Do employers prefer pre-apprenticeship electricians?

There is no universal requirement for employers to hire applicants who have completed a pre-apprenticeship. Employers make their own recruitment decisions, and apprentices can come from a wide range of backgrounds.

However, electrical apprenticeships can be competitive in Australia. Employers may receive many applications for a single position, particularly in larger metropolitan areas such as Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane.

Having completed an electrical pre-apprenticeship can give you something relevant to discuss during an interview. Rather than simply saying you’re interested in becoming an electrician, you may be able to demonstrate that you’ve already spent time learning about the trade and developing basic practical skills.

What if I don’t have any electrical experience?

Not having previous electrical experience doesn’t automatically prevent you from securing an apprenticeship.

Employers may consider factors such as your attitude, reliability, willingness to learn, communication skills, safety awareness, and your ability to work as part of a team. Your previous experience can also be valuable, even if it isn’t electrical. Experience in construction, manufacturing, engineering, maintenance, customer service or other practical environments may demonstrate transferable skills.

Based on an article from Youth Central Victoria, it was stated that “Some employers prefer apprentices and trainees who have completed year 12 because it shows their commitment to learning and achieving results. When you finish school you’re also a little bit more mature, and old enough to get a licence” Youth Central Victoria, n.d.).

If you haven’t completed a pre-apprenticeship, you can still prepare yourself by researching the trade, understanding what an electrical apprentice does, developing basic tool knowledge, and seeking opportunities to gain relevant workplace experience.

Is a pre-apprenticeship worth doing?

For some people, a pre-apprenticeship can be a useful pathway into the electrical trade. It isn’t a guarantee of an apprenticeship, however it can help you build foundational skills, demonstrate commitment, and enter the job market with a better understanding of the industry.

Ultimately, there is more than one pathway to becoming an electrician. You can obtain an electrical apprenticeship without completing a pre-apprenticeship, however completing relevant training beforehand may help you understand the trade, and present yourself as a more informed candidate when applying for positions.
